Division of Pediatric Endocrinology
The Division of Pediatric Endocrinology provides comprehensive care for a full range of pediatric disorders affecting growth, puberty, sexual differentiation, adrenal and thyroid. Our specialist also manage and follow patients with metabolic bone disorders like type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, obesity and insulin resistance.
Our diabetes program specifically follows more than 2,000 children offering them individualized and intensive case management. Our multidisciplinary team - four board-certified pediatric endocrinologists, two nurse practitioners, a diabetes coordinator and educator, nurses, social workers, dietitians and child-life specialists - provides family-focused care to patients with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
We are actively working towards establishing a Center of Excellence for diabetes and obesity management. The team has two studies underway focusing on both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Type 1 Diabetes TrialNet, an international network of researchers led by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is exploring ways to prevent and delay type 1 diabetes. Another study uses a novel oral drug in childhood type 2 diabetes.
For more information about type 1 diabetes screening and research studies offered at UMMC, call (601) 815-9172 or email.
